Night of Ideas – To be alive, to become machinic?
On the occasion of the 5th edition of the Night of Ideas, on January 30, 2020, the Musée des Arts et Métiers invites the Arts & Sciences Chair, at the initiative of the Institut français and with the support of the Daniel and Nina Carasso Foundation, for an evening of transdisciplinary encounters and artistic experiences around our “machinic future”. Are we becoming machines? Are robots, machines and other screens allies or threats? What does “living being” mean in this context?
By questioning the “living” future of machines and its corollary, the “machinic becoming” of humans, the thirty or so speakers invited to the Musée des Arts et Métiers on Thursday 30 January will explore our interdependence with current technologies and innovations , on a scientific and technical level but also on a societal and artistic level, by offering the public the opportunity to experiment different art installations and to attend performances that invest the body and our sensitive side, in connection with our “machinic becoming”:

The Daniel and Nina Carasso Foundation, alongside the Institut Français, is participating in the Night of Ideas through the Arts & Sciences Chair. Created jointly with the École Polytechnique and the École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs – PSL, this transdisciplinary Chair has been developing since 2017 a cooperation program between researchers, artists and scientists to respond to contemporary societal challenges – climate emergency, social and technological changes, etc. – by inventing new forms of knowledge and offering renewed formats, both for the academic public and the general public.
From Tokyo to Buenos Aires, from San Francisco to Kinshasa, from Tehran to Bogota, from Baghdad to Montreal, via Sarajevo, Berlin, Kathmandu, London, Bucharest or Helsinki… More than 150 Nights of Ideas will be organized around the world. Philosophers, writers, researchers, intellectuals, students, whistleblowers, artists and political figures will engage in a debate with the public to remind us of the urgency of collective awareness and citizen mobilization on an international scale in favor of the preservation of our planet.
