New call for research residencies of the MAR platform
From the Daniel and Nina Carasso Foundation, the hablarenarte association and the Reina Sofía Museum we call for the second edition of the Notar call for research residencies, integrated into the MAR platform for cultural mediation and new institutionalities that serves as a space for meeting, reflection, research, action and archiving for agents and organizations interested in this field.
The first edition of Notar allowed us to take the pulse of the sector, to know its concerns and interests. The large number of applications and the high quality of many of them has led us to repeat the experience with a second call that will remain open until October 23. In this second call we have refined some aspects such as the lines of research and their link with cultural mediation, maintaining the same objective of generating new knowledge around cultural mediation practices and considering research as a key element to establish and legitimize them.
Notar II contemplates support for the realization of four residencies to which an amount of 5,000 euros will be granted, either individual or collective residencies. Each of them will last two months to choose between March and April or May and June 2023. This year, all of them will take place in person at the facilities of Planta Alta, the residency space of hablarenarte.
“Notar has been MAR’s first public action, a great milestone also for us, who cannot imagine our desired future world without innovative and daring cultural mediation that connects with people deeply and helps cultural institutions to reinvent themselves and leave their walls”
Isabelle Le Galo, director for Spain of the Daniel and Nina Carasso Foundation
MAR is a platform that aims to promote relevant actions for change in the modes of production and collective participation of culture, understanding cultural mediation as a priority tool for these transformations. Thus, the objective of these residencies is to generate and consolidate areas of knowledge linked to critical pedagogies and experimental cultural mediation, as well as the collective articulation of a research community from which new knowledge and critical approaches can be produced and made visible.
“The first edition has been marked by its effervescence and experimentality. It is a work where management, the affective, the theoretical and the artistic are intertwined. The face-to-face meetings with the residents stand out, where we have created a small community of thought and practice that reflects the multiple strategies to make art a permeable critical and propositional space, inhabited by multiple bodies”.
Flavia Introzzi, curator of artistic projects and mediation at hablarenarte
The aim of the residencies is to promote research in mediation, as well as participation in a collective process of reflection by making available the bibliographic and documentary resources of the Museo Reina Sofía and hablarenarte, in an international framework of research and dialogue with the aforementioned lines of research , generating synergies with the different areas of the MAR platform.
To be eligible for these residencies, candidates must have a professional profile such as researchers, artists, curators, cultural managers, teachers, collective mediators or hybrid or interdisciplinary profiles of any nationality. Both individuals at the individual level and grouped persons of legal age can present a project that generates knowledge or new knowledge in cultural mediation, art/education and/or new institutions.

To apply for these residencies, candidates can choose one of the following lines of research:
- Contemporary malaises: mediation practices that address the consequences of multiple crises, from the circumstances unleashed by the pandemic, to the emergence of contemporary fascisms and the different geopolitical tensions, including the seriousness of the ecological crisis or the growing precariousness of life.
- Mediation policies/critical pedagogies: mediation practices that contribute to rethinking the ways in which we relate and create culture collectively.
- Commons: experimental mediation practices that promote alternative forms of governance, management, learning or cultural creation, focused on dialogue between the community, the public and the commons.
- Porous institutions: practices that tension and promote cracks in social and institutional structures that promote the construction of a cultural democracy. In the 2022-23 edition, this line of researchfocuses on childhood and old age, traditionally treated as subaltern and/or passive groups in cultural policies.
- Detours: mediation practices that promote alternative forms of connectivity, thought, and inhabiting the world, linked to artistic activism and social movements, as well as the formation of care networks that illuminate other ways of sustaining ourselves.
- Archive and memory: review of histories and archives of experiences of art/education and cultural mediation, considering the plurality of expressions of archival practice, from the community to the institutional, both nationally and internationally.
