The fourth edition of the Direct Complement scholarship program for cultural mediation studies is now open
The Daniel and Nina Carasso Foundation, in collaboration with the hablarenarte association, launches the call for a new edition of Direct Complement. Through this programme to support higher studies in cultural mediation, 14 scholarships are offered with a financial allocation of 2,200 euros each. The purpose of these scholarships is to support future professionals in the sector who are committed to specialising in cultural mediation, thus promoting the professionalisation and legitimisation of this essential practice to encourage the participation of all people in the cultural field. The application period is open until September 12.
Cultural mediation is an essential tool for the democratization of culture, as it promotes the active participation, inclusion and empowerment of citizens in the cultural life of their community. This process acts as a bridge between individuals and cultural institutions, allowing for effective communication and greater mutual understanding. For this reason, at the Daniel and Nina Carasso Foundation we believe that cultural mediation is necessary for an active, empowered and cohesive citizenry. Aware of this scenario, we believe that supporting the professionalisation of the figure of the mediator is very important and we do so, in collaboration with hablarenarte, through Complement Directo which, since it began in 2021, has been very well received in the sector.

The call for this grant program will receive applications until September 12 and will provide 14 scholarships with an amount of € 2,200 for each one. The aim is to offer financial aid to students of any nationality who wish to carry out their postgraduate studies linked to cultural mediation in Spanish academic centres during the 2024-2025 academic year.
One of the requirements to be able to access the call is that the people who apply must be admitted and pre-registered in the studies for which the scholarship is requested at the time of formalizing the application. Priority will be given to those who have greater economic difficulties. In addition, cultural diversity, gender, profiles and trajectories, as well as destination universities, will also be assessment criteria in the selection process.
It is necessary to have the work of cultural mediation to generate cohesion between citizens and all the agents of the cultural ecosystem. The ‘Direct Complement’ program aims to consolidate this profession, as well as to generate a network that allows the exchange of knowledge between the very diverse profiles questioned by mediation work.
ANNEKE RASKIN, project coordinator of Citizen Art programs at the Daniel and Nina Carasso Foundation
In addition to financial support, Complement Directo constitutes a community that supports, builds and learns with students. Each of the grants includes an individual and collective mentoring programme with professionals in the sector, enriching training and providing spaces for weaving labour networks. These sessions have the support of the scholarship recipients so that they are really positive and support their training as much as possible, avoiding repeating issues already dealt with in their studies. In previous editions, cultural mediation professionals and artists such as Javier Rodrigo (Transductores), Sofía de Juan (Prado Museum), Renata Cervetto (MAR), AMECUM, Ana Andrés (Cerezales Foundation), Marta Fernández Calvo (artist), Ana Gallardo (artist), Amparo Moroño (Association of Municipalities Valle del Jerte), Anto Rodríguez (researcher and scenic artist) or Marina Monsonís (artist and ecologist) have been present. In addition, collaborations have been carried out with the Student Residence, the artistic residency space Planta Alta and the (re)return to the Condeduque courtyard project. In the face-to-face meetings, the scholarship recipients share experiences, visions and concerns about the future of cultural mediation and their professional development.
This year has not been easy for cultural mediation, with strikes linked to working conditions, attacks on community culture and harassment of master’s degrees and important curricula: programmes such as Direct Complement are a necessary bulwark for a booming sector, but still fragile and subalternized. Its alumni community is growing and it is nice to see enriching trajectories and practices flourish despite adversity”
CARLOS ALMELA
Responsible for cultural projects at hablarenarte
It is possible to apply on the hablaenarte website until September 12. The scholarship recipients will be pre-selected by a committee made up of members of the Foundation, hablarenarte and external cultural mediators. The final selection will be made by a jury made up of recognized professionals in the field of culture and mediation.
Direct Complement has allowed me to have the possibility of continuing to study and expand my knowledge. And to do so, not only through a master’s degree, but through a network of accompaniment where human and professional training can be shared and expanded.
ORIOL ESCURSELL, SCHOLARSHIP HOLDER IN THE 3RD EDITION OF DIRECT COMPLEMENT 23-24
With the Direct Complement aid programme we want to continue strengthening the ecosystem of cultural mediation, its agents and networks, especially at this time when the precariousness of the sector is evident. From the Daniel and Nina Carasso Foundation, we make clear our commitment to value cultural mediation to build fairer, more inclusive and sustainable societies in all its dimensions, through art.
