Sustainable food

FoodCoopBCN

The Daniel and Nina Carasso Foundation supports FoodCoopBCN, the first cooperative and participatory supermarket in Barcelona, as part of its drive towards sustainable food models in urban contexts. This experience articulates a consumption space managed by the community, with criteria of environmental sustainability, proximity of products and economic equity between consumers and producers. The proposal responds to the challenge of making food consumption consistent with social and ecological values accessible in a large city.

A cooperative and participatory supermarket in Barcelona

FoodCoopBCN operates on Passatge d’Aragó, in the Eixample district. The project was consolidated after several years of collective work that culminated in the opening of the supermarket in 2022. Its structure is non-profit; the members are both owners and users, and combine the operation of a commercial establishment with the democratic management of a consumer cooperative.

Democratic structure and collective management

The cooperative articulates decision-making through a general assembly where all members have a voice and vote in strategic and purchasing matters. Day-to-day operations are organised through working groups or “circles” that take on operational and internal coordination functions. This structure supports co-responsibility among those who are part of the project and allows tasks such as communication, finance, governance or attention to be distributed in the premises.

Product offering with sustainability criteria

FoodCoopBCN’s offer includes more than 1,200 food and non-food products selected collectively with criteria of proximity, sustainability and quality. The assortment includes fresh food and bulk products designed to reduce plastic waste, as well as hygiene and cleaning goods. The cooperative gives priority to small and medium-sized producers in the Catalan environment and promotes production practices that respect the environment.

Access, economic conditions and participation

The supermarket is open to the general public, but members have access to more favourable prices and spaces for participation in the collective decisions that guide the project. Affiliation to the project requires a one-time contribution to the share capital and a monthly dedication of time to the supermarket’s operational activities. This model of co-responsibility contributes to sustaining affordable prices and strengthens community commitment.

Contributing to sustainable food systems

FoodCoopBCN proposes an alternative to mainstream consumption by integrating environmental, social and participatory criteria into everyday shopping. The initiative favors access to sustainable products, strengthens the local social economy and expands the visibility of consumption models that prioritize the relationship between citizens, territory and the environment.
