Cultural Innovation Laboratory

The National Museum of Decorative Arts (MNAD) in Madrid is embarking on a process of structural transformation to redefine its identity as a design museum through the creation of the Cultural Innovation Laboratory, an initiative promoted with the support of the Daniel and Nina Carasso Foundation. The laboratory was born from the alliance with AIDI, the Association for Research, Design and Innovation, a diverse group of professionals and agents that works in collaborative networks to integrate design, culture, research and social innovation in open and participatory processes.

Methodology and development

The laboratory’s methodology incorporates open innovation practices and citizen participation, with a backbone role in artistic mediation facilitated by Amecum, the Association of Cultural Mediators of Madrid , which promotes the professionalization of cultural mediation as a tool to develop a critical and empowered citizenship through culture.

The project articulates its development around four thematic axes, cultural democracy, critical thinking, identity and sustainability, aimed at building a diverse and active community with effective mechanisms for participation and collective reflection. The documentation, communication and dissemination of the processes will allow learning to be transferred to the museum and lay a basis that can be replicated in other cultural institutions.
