Sustainable food
Project to recover abandoned centenary olive trees in Oliete (Teruel) through a citizen sponsorship system that finances their care and their return to production. The initiative organizes the agricultural work necessary to restore the historic olive grove of the municipality and produce extra virgin olive oil under the Mi Olivo brand, with the aim of reactivating local agricultural activity and conserving an agricultural heritage threatened by the abandonment of the countryside. Sponsor an olive tree arises in a context of strong depopulation that left thousands of trees uncultivated in this town in the valley of the Martín River. Citizen support allows the recovery of olive groves, generates employment and brings the urban population closer to food production. In 2017, the initiative was selected in the Sustainable Food Systems call of the Daniel and Nina Carasso Foundation, a program that identifies and supports initiatives capable of promoting productive, social and economic practices that contribute to the transition to more sustainable food systems.
