Biotic Cities

Institutional context and selection

The Daniel and Nina Carasso Foundation’s Comparing Knowledge 2023 call supports projects that integrate artists, researchers, and citizens in proposals on ecosocial challenges. Within this framework, Biotic Cities proposes to move towards more sustainable, fair and inclusive models for urban public space.

The project is part of a set of initiatives selected by this call that operate in different territories of the Spanish State and share a collaborative approach between artistic creation, research and collective processes.

Methodology and main activities

Biotic Cities organizes its work around three lines of action. The first consists of identifying the knowledge needs of citizens as users and co-operators of public space, with the aim of guiding interventions and design processes with real data and priorities.

The second line contemplates testing pilot projects of urban transformation that place living capital – the network of human, ecological and cultural relationships – as a central element of design. These tests are structured from eco-design practices integrated with criteria of justice and sustainability.

The third line is aimed at building an active community of theory and practice that co-designs protocols and tools for the socio-ecological regeneration of public space. This community operates through mediation processes between local agents, citizens and administrations.
