Sustainable food

Prat Alimenta

In El Prat de Llobregat, a municipality with an extensive productive agricultural area and a track record of public policies aimed at sustainable food systems, Prat Alimenta is being deployed, a participatory process to define an urban food strategy. The initiative, promoted by the City Council and facilitated by the Espigoladors Foundation, responds to the 2020 municipal commission to reorient the lines of action in the food field to integrate sustainability, equity and resilience through the participation of agents of the local agri-food system and citizens.

Participatory governance and social approach

The project was born in 2022 with funding from the Daniel and Nina Carasso Foundation and seeks to articulate the different existing actions in El Prat linked to food in an inclusive city strategy, which reflects the knowledge, needs and proposals of producers, social groups, municipal technicians and neighbors. The process has included multiple collective sessions, interviews and approaches to the community to learn about the real state of the agri-food chain and adapt it to projects and visions already present in the territory.

The Espigoladors Foundation, based in Barcelona, works against food waste and for the right to healthy and sustainable food, through a model that recovers discarded food and generates job opportunities for groups at risk of social exclusion. His proposal for Prat Alimenta emphasizes the construction of a participatory governance that incorporates the different actors of the food system in the definition and execution of the strategy.
