Sustainable food

EcoComedores Extremadura

Promotion of the transition towards healthier and more sustainable school canteens in public schools in the region. The project promotes menus made with fresh, seasonal and local food, and seeks to strengthen the relationship between schools, families, local producers, catering companies and public administrations. The initiative analyzes the management models that predominate in school canteens and studies their social, environmental and economic viability. In particular, it compares the model based on fresh and local food with the catering system of pre-cooked or frozen dishes that currently supplies many educational centers. Ecocomedores Extremadura also promotes spaces for collaboration between the actors of the school canteen and promotes the exchange of experiences and good practices. The aim is to facilitate the progressive implementation of more sustainable menus and eating habits. The project, promoted by the Landscape, Ecology and Gender association, gives continuity to the previous project School Feeding and SDGs, which carried out a diagnosis of school feeding in the region. The initiative is part of the Territorialized Food Systems 2022 call of the Sustainable Food axis of the Daniel and Nina Carasso Foundation.
