Sustainable food

From commissaries to solidarity shops

Caritas Spain , with the support of the Daniel and Nina Carasso Foundation, is promoting a feasibility study to accompany the transition of its commissaries and Food Distribution Centres (CDAs) towards open solidarity shops accessible to all citizens. The initiative is based on the need to update the food aid model towards formulas that reinforce dignity, reduce stigmatization and consolidate the right to healthy and nutritious food.

Context and purpose

The study takes a strategic and operational view. It analyses the current and emerging regulatory framework, with special attention to Law 1/2025, as well as trends in the social economy, waste reduction and non-stigmatising access models. The proposal is articulated in four actions, one of them focused on two territories of the State. The work will be carried out between 1 January and 31 August 2026 by an interdisciplinary team linked to right to food programmes at Caritas.

The objective is to consolidate a model that facilitates social inclusion, strengthens personal autonomy and contributes to the labor incorporation and community life of people in vulnerable situations. The project is a beneficiary of the Foundation’s Universal Access to Healthy and Sustainable Food Program .
