Context and purpose
Cultural rights, in this context, are understood asreal capacities to participate, produce, share and preserve cultural practices and knowledge linked to specific identities and memories, which are often left out of conventional cultural agendas. For this reason, Weaving Roots was born from the need to generate narratives that incorporate historically invisible experiences and to strengthen cultural spaces that contribute to the recognition of diverse identities.
Main activities
The project is developed in Madrid during 2024 and is deployed in three key actions: the creation of a reference archive, a space for specialized debate and a thematic exhibition.
- The first activity consists of the constitution of the Afro Archive, a repository of materials, testimonies and documentation that aspires to become a permanent resource recognized among state historical archives. The objective is to facilitate public access to sources that allow the reconstruction and dissemination of the stories of the Afro-descendant population in Spain.
- The second action is a seminar dedicated to cultural rights, conceived as a space for dialogue between cultural agents, academics and communities. This meeting aims to address key concepts in the field and explore institutional and community practices that strengthen effective cultural participation.
- The third scheduled activity is an exhibition on marronage, which invites you to explore stories of resistance and freedom from an artistic-cultural perspective.
Alliances and collaborative structure
The implementation of the project is supported by a public-social alliance that involves the General Sub-Directorates of State Museums and State Archives of the Ministry of Culture, the Museum of America, the Osikan entity and the Conciencia Afro association. These collaborations facilitate the institutional and community articulation of the planned activities.
