Feedback on territorialized food systems

Resilient territories and sectors
Share on :

Territorial approaches contribute to the agricultural and food transition. Whether they are called “short circuits” or “territorialized food projects”, they reconnect eaters and producers, and facilitate cooperation. They often involve agroecological and job-creating production methods. We believe in these approaches, and have been supporting them since 2014 in France and Spain. In 2018, we brought together 22 projects, in connection with Territorialized Food Systems, supported in France and Spain.

Following a year-long participatory process, analysis and sharing of experiences with these projects, we wish to testify to the learnings collected from these actors of the Transition.

We share with you here the results of our approach through: a “Carasso Notebook”, detailed sheets allowing access to the more technical elements of each project and videos.

Methodology

Bibliography, interviews, collective intelligence workshops to frame the methodology, individual interviews, field visits, collective validation and debate… The objective of this experimental approach is to “capitalise” on the experience of 22 leaders or accompanists of territorial food projects, in France and Spain. The analysis of the trajectories brought out a large number of points of attention. Collectively, the project leaders prioritized, and then selected, the questions that seemed essential to them for the success of a territorialized food system. The questions focused on how they mobilised local actors and structured their governance, as well as on the economic models implemented by each project. Based on this grid, the survey work was carried out in the field to collect experiences and testimonies. The participatory nature, which resulted in collective times of reflection and validation, guarantees the relevance of the lessons learned and their resonance with the problems of sustainable food actors.

This work was carried out by the teams of AOConsulting and the Challenges department (Development, expertise, training, engineering for the South) of Montpellier SupAgro for France, and by those of the NGO Cerai (Centre for Rural Studies and International Agriculture) for Spain.

We have noted the importance of economic, governance and stakeholder mobilization issues for the stability of these territorial approaches. While collective catering often remains a central tool for local authorities, it is expanded with multiple complementary initiatives, relayed in this Carasso Notebook. We hope that you will find inspiration, hindsight on your own territorial approaches, useful contacts.
