The Veduta program at the Lyon Biennial of Contemporary Art

Born of the desire to make the relationship between Art and Territory one of the axes of the development of the Biennale d’art contemporain, the Veduta program proposes situations of encounters, exchanges and shared creations that bring together curious people, artists, works and ecosystems. It is written and established over the long term, thanks to its strong relationships with the territories and their players, and to artistic co-construction processes that require artists to immerse themselves in the places and residents to invest in the projects.

From the outset, the Biennial chose to consider its territory as its center of gravity and source of creativity. On the scale of biennials worldwide, this represented an atypical position: to be both local and international. In 2007, the birth of the Veduta program reinforced this desire to be rooted in the local area, fully integrating viewers and users in a variety of actions: residencies, shared curatorial offices, physical and mental wanderings. The work becomes a potential to be activated, recreated and actualized by many. The challenges of Veduta/Biennale de Lyon intersect with those of its public sponsors, as well as those of partner structures, artists and local residents. These include the richness of cultural diversity and the fight against discrimination, the enhancement and animation of territories, the strengthening of their attractiveness, living together, support for creation and its dissemination, local and international influence, the visibility of Lyon, its Metropolis and the Auvergne – Rhône-Alpes Region.
