Mestura La Palma

Mestura La Palma: memory and roots after the volcano is a process of accompaniment and community culture designed to support the population that lived through the eruption of the Tajogaite volcano on the island of La Palma. The initiative identifies and makes visible community heritages (places, practices, stories and objects that sustain people’s sense of belonging to the territory) through meetings, workshops and cultural experiences that generate a map of memories and shared knowledge in the Aridane Valley. The project has the financial support of the Daniel and Nina Carasso Foundation within the framework of the Alliances for a Cultural Democracy 2022 call.

Mestura La Palma promotes spaces for dialogue and active listening to reflect on what defines the collective identity of this community affected by 85 days of eruption, massive displacements and loss of neighborhoods and daily lives. Based on these actions, it develops a set of tools, called memory and rooting devices, which materialize oral, photographic or audiovisual archives with the experiences of those who have lived through the emergency and its consequences.

Together with the financial support of the Carasso Foundation, this initiative is developed in collaboration with the Office of Civic Innovation S. Coop. and the cultural association Karmala Cultura, with the support of local public administrations and community organizations.
