Shellfish with Sciences

Mariscando con Ciencias para el futuro articulates the collaboration between shellfish gatherers, research staff, local artists and the city council of Redondela (Galicia) to address environmental challenges that affect artisanal shellfish harvesting and project sustainable future scenarios for this traditional profession. The project is led by Cidadanía Sociedade Cooperativa Galega and is made up of Amarturmar, Future Oceans Lab (University of Vigo) and Sinha Paca – Artelixo. It is part of the Citizen Art axis of the Daniel and Nina Carasso Foundation.

Context and objective

Shellfishing on foot in Galicia represents an artisanal activity deeply rooted in the social, cultural and economic identity of coastal communities. In the face of contemporary environmental challenges, the project seeks to create a space for interdisciplinary dialogue that integrates technical, scientific and popular knowledge to diagnose the transformations in this productive sector and collectively build perspectives on its future viability.

Activities carried out

The initiative will take place between 2025 and 2026 in the cove of San Simón, in the Ría de Vigo, where collaborative meetings between shellfish gatherers, researchers and cultural agents are contemplated to share experiences and analysis on the environmental impact of shellfish, as well as activities aimed at the co-production of knowledge with the local community. Artistic participation has a mediating role: visual creation and other aesthetic languages will facilitate the communication of complex findings and reinforce the visibility of the practices, knowledge and challenges of the sector.

Convocation and accompaniment

Shellfish with Sciences for the Future was one of the nine initiatives selected in the sixth edition of the call Composing knowledge to imagine and build sustainable futures organized by the Foundation. The call, biennial since 2015, promotes collaboration between art, science and citizens to address eco-social challenges through creative and experimental processes.

Integration of knowledge and community

The project conceives art as a tool to translate complex practices and knowledge into accessible narratives, enhancing the dialogue between community experience and scientific analysis. The participation of shellfish gatherers on foot, together with research teams and local artists, constitutes an approach that values the diversity of perspectives to face environmental transformations without losing sight of the cultural and productive dimension of artisanal fishing.
