Discover the Proceedings of our seminar “Composing knowledge”
On February 2, 2018, we organized an extraordinary general assembly of composers of knowledge at the Cité internationale des arts, as part of the event “We are not the number we think we are “. A Franco-Spanish seminar that allowed us to bring together all the project leaders supported as part of our call for projects “Composing knowledge to better understand the challenges of the contemporary world “. We are delighted to share with you today the Report of this seminar.
Supporting “composers of knowledge”
Through our “Art, Science and Society” program, we encourage the intersection of art and science in research-creation projects that invent new models of knowledge construction around the major questions of our society. Convinced that the era we are living in calls for a transdisciplinary approach through the mobilization of the creative forces of the arts and sciences, in 2015 we initiated the Call for projects “Composing knowledge to better understand the challenges of the contemporary world“.
This call for projects has enabled us to identify and support 45 projects (33 in France and 12 in Spain) for cooperation between artists and scientists who are experimenting with other ways of understanding current phenomena: climate change, migration, acceleration of knowledge, resource management, geographical and economic inequalities, etc.

A seminar to share experiences
The objective of the seminar “Composing knowledge” was to invite these project leaders to share their experiences in order to establish a map of the challenges of their multiple approaches and to outline a common horizon for reflection and action.
We have entrusted the preparation, animation and reporting of this seminar to Julia Morandeira and Valérie Pihet who have been working for many years on the conditions of encounter of different forms of knowledge: artistic and scientific, but also profane (professional, experiential or customary).
This seminar was held on the occasion of the event “We are not the number we think we are” which took place on February 2 and 3, 2018 at the Cité internationale des arts in Paris at our initiative, in collaboration with the Arts & Sciences Chair (Ecole Polytechnique and Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs).
For 36 hours non-stop, nearly 300 international speakers from all walks of life (artists, researchers, thinkers, scientists, project leaders) but also hundreds of students and more than 5,500 visitors came to participate in this dialogue between arts and sciences to imagine tomorrow.
Two days and one night open to all, during which visitors were able to discover and immerse themselves, in the heart of the Cité internationale des arts, in dozens of workshops, conferences, exhibitions and other performances based on the world of science fiction short stories written by Ursula K. Le Guin collected in the collection The Compass Rose. Through an abundant program, skilfully orchestrated by Mélanie Bouteloup, director of Bétonsalon and curator of the event, everyone was able to take the time to reflect on scientific, ecological, civic and artistic concerns, but also to participate in the work processes and the development of knowledge.

Towards new projects
In 2019, we launched a new edition of the call for projects “Composing knowledge to better understand the challenges of the contemporary world” to continue to encourage projects that promote cooperation between artists, researchers and citizens to understand and act on the challenges of the contemporary world.
The results of this call and the list of supported projects will be communicated on this website in September.
