PEGASE (Programme Expérimental de Généralisation des Arts à l’École – Experimental Program for the Generalization of the Arts at School)

PEGASE (Programme expérimental de généralisation des arts à l’École) contributes fully to the academic success of students. The program aims to develop artistic and cultural activities in schools in a given area, in collaboration with local teaching teams and cultural players. The program is based on the three pillars of artistic and cultural education: the acquisition of knowledge, encounters with artworks and professionals, and artistic practice.

PEGASE is a school-wide program for artistic and cultural education that places student success at the heart of its ambitions.
The Daniel and Nina Carasso Foundation and the Académie de Versailles are partners in the design and support of this multi-year program.

A shared vision of artistic and cultural education

Through PEGASE, the Daniel and Nina Carasso Foundation is committed to supporting partner establishments over the long term, according to their needs, and to providing the necessary resources to network them with local artistic and cultural structures.

The Académie de Versailles sees artistic and cultural education as a partnership between schools and the world of culture, for the benefit of students. It supports the generalization of artistic and cultural education by reinforcing the coherence between teaching and artistic and cultural activities. The DAAC (Délégation Académique à l’Action Culturelle) advises, coordinates and monitors all areas, approaches and activities in the field of cultural action.

Teachers at the heart of the program

Five pilot schools have been identified, from kindergarten to high school, in the Académie de Versailles: the RPI Châlo-Saint-Mars, Saint-Hilaire; the collège Ariane in Guyancourt; the collège Eugénie Cotton in Argenteuil; the lycée polyvalent Marguerite Yourcenar in Morangis; and the lycée professionnel Léonard de Vinci in Bagneux. Projects began at these establishments during the 2018-2019 school year.

Teachers are invited to imagine Artistic and Cultural Projects in Educational Territories (PACTE), according to the following criteria:

  • An interdisciplinary team of teachers
  • Teaching objectives defined in relation to an artistic and/or scientific approach
  • Co-construction of project content with at least one partner cultural structure
  • The project’s impact on the school.

A program based on a project approach

Each group develops an artistic and cultural education project based on an approach that integrates :

Artistic or scientific practice accompanied by teaching teams and artists. Students learn to develop their sensitivity and creativity.

  • Encounters with works of art and professionals from the worlds of art, culture and research.
  • The acquisition of knowledge, within the framework of school curricula.
  • Students develop their own critical judgment, learning to become independent, enlightened citizens in today’s society.
  • The teachers and professionals involved work closely together, linking artistic and educational approaches to fundamental learning.

Program evaluation tools

Experimental and innovative, PEGASE is being evaluated for the duration of the program by the Observation Universitaire International Education et Prévention (OUIEP), under the direction of Benjamin Moignard, senior lecturer in educational science. OUIEP brings together researchers working in the field of education, with a focus on research, training and the evaluation of public policies in education.

The evaluation (both qualitative and quantitative) aims to measure the effects of this program on students and the educational community as a whole, and more specifically on :

  • Students’ academic success and progress in all subjects thanks to EAC
  • The school climate, which is defined by the ability of students to get down to work, and which is perceived by the fluidity of community life.
  • Students’ civic commitment
  • Mobilizing the various players

This evaluation will also enable us to consider how best practices can be promoted and disseminated. In this way, this pilot program will be used as a model for other academies.
