What should the food system of a fairer and more sustainable tomorrow look like? This question will be answered in unoconcinco, the first sustainable food meetings in Spain that we organize from the Daniel and Nina Carasso Foundation. On 27 October, at the Casa del Lector in Madrid but also online, a wide range of actors from the food sector, from production to consumption, and from different public and private spheres will meet to address the challenges that exist on the road to a greener and fairer food system. Throughout the day, dialogue will be the main vehicle to promote collaboration and weave alliances between the different actors who are promoting change.

Food is the basis of life and at the same time a system that connects people, organizations, companies and administrations whose decisions influence how food is produced, distributed and consumed. But it is also linked to environmental impacts and social inequalities that have a direct impact on the health of people and ecosystems. For this reason, the context of socio-economic crisis and climate emergency that we are experiencing leads us to look for options to build a more sustainable present and future.

unoconcinco is proposed as a unique meeting and an opportunity to exchange experiences and generate alliances in favor of the transition to sustainable food. Various experts will contribute knowledge from different places to promote policies and initiatives that guarantee food security under the premise of an ecological and fair transition, ensuring food that takes care of the health of people and the planet. All talks, round tables and workshops will revolve around it.

“Food is one of the keys to achieving this, a lever of change for social transformation that allows us to address all the Sustainable Development Goals that we have set for 2030. We have the evidence that shows that now, more than ever, is the time to act.”

Isabelle Le Galo, director for Spain of the Daniel and Nina Carasso Foundation

The programme is divided into three main blocks: challenges, evidence and solutions. We will attend various round tables that will try to provide solutions to complex challenges that can only be addressed through the collaboration of actors and with the support of tools such as digitalisation, research, innovation or communication. In this sense, it will discuss how policies can guarantee food security and compliance with European strategies in Spain, some examples of food policies in favor of sustainability at local, regional and state level will be presented.

The role of food in the ecological and just transition will also be addressed through different examples of initiatives that, from different places and from the perspective of sustainable food, contribute to the ecological and just transition. For all this, we have the participation of experts and professionals from the food, research, health or philanthropy sectors.
