La Osa Cooperative Supermarket

Cooperative food and waste reduction in Madrid through the participatory supermarket La Osa. This project promotes a food distribution model based on citizen cooperation, access to quality products and the reduction of the environmental impact of consumption. The supermarket operates as a non-profit cooperative located in the district of Tetuán, where members carry out management tasks for three hours every four weeks in order to be able to Buy food and everyday products selected according to criteria of sustainability, proximity and ethical production. In this context, the project Cooperative Supermarkets and Small Commerce towards Zero Waste is being developed, supported by the Daniel and Nina Carasso Foundation within its axis Sustainable food. The initiative, presented by La Osa in alliance with consumer and user cooperatives in Madrid, brings together entities such as Biolíbere, the Network of Cooperative Supermarkets, the Research Group in Architecture, Urbanism and Sustainability (UPM) and Al Grano para expe To strengthen solutions that reduce single-use packaging in food distribution. For two years, bulk sales systems, returnable containers for transport and cooperative glass recovery mechanisms were prototyped, with the aim of Generate replicable models for cooperative supermarkets, local commerce and local producers.
