Context and purpose
Recoopera is part of the Sustainable Food axis of the Daniel and Nina Carasso Foundation in Spain. It is conceived as a contribution to agroecological transition processes linked to rural communities. It seeks to strengthen models of production, distribution and consumption of food rooted in the territory.
The loss of agricultural heritage and the fragmentation of cooperative initiatives pose challenges to local food systems. Recoopera addresses these challenges through coordination between cooperative entities that share values and objectives linked to agroecology and the social economy.
Areas of intervention
The project operates in two territories of Catalonia: Central Catalonia–Terres Gironines and Camp de Tarragona. Agricultural cooperatives with a historical presence exist in these regions, providing a diverse context for learning about the effects of intercooperation between new initiatives and established organizations.

Intercooperation actions
Recoopera articulates collaborative processes between cooperatives that face common challenges and opportunities. Links between agro-ecological entities and traditional agricultural cooperatives are strengthened to promote spaces for joint work, exchange of experiences and practices that favor the resilience of local food systems.
Intercooperation is based on recognizing that the diversity of experiences and production models in the territories can enrich agroecological transition practices. The collaboration allows for the sharing of knowledge, expansion of operational capacities and reinforcement of the insertion of social and solidarity economy models in local markets and consumer networks connected to the rural environment.
Collective dynamics
In the areas of intervention, technical and strategic meeting spaces are generated between cooperatives. These dynamics facilitate joint actions and collective learning processes. The purpose is to expand the scope of agroecological practices and consolidate inter-cooperative support networks that strengthen the environmental, social and economic sustainability of the initiatives involved.
Linking with KM Tierra
Recoopera’s approach is aligned with other initiatives supported by the Foundation within the framework of the KM Tierra pilot program. This program accompanies local projects to structure territorialized food systems through connectors between active initiatives in each territory.
